Alberta $14.9 million LOTTO 6/49 jackpot from June 7th draw still unclaimed

Lottery players should always make it a habit to check the winning numbers for every ticket that they purchase. If they win a prize - whether it is $5, $10, $100 or even more - they're entitled to that prize and should always claim it.

Alberta lottery players may want to pay a little more attention right now to older tickets that they haven't checked. That's because a ticket purchased in Alberta for the June 7th LOTTO 6/49 draw worth $14.9 Million remains unclaimed three months after the draw.

The winning numbers for the June 7th LOTTO 6/49 draw were 11, 12, 14, 27, 34 and 48. Two tickets - one sold in Alberta and one sold in Nova Scotia - matched these numbers to share in the $29,827,914 Jackpot, entitling each ticket holder to a prize of $14,913,957. The Nova Scotia ticket was presented for prize claim shortly after the draw, but the Alberta winner or winners have yet to come forward.

"Lottery winners have a year from the draw date to claim their prizes, and most claim within the first two weeks," said Kathleen Polyak, spokesperson for Western Canada Lottery Corporation. "It's a little surprising that the $14.9 Million prize is still outstanding, and we certainly recommend that Albertans check the winning numbers for any tickets that they have tucked away."

Delays in claiming Jackpot prizes are rare, but they have occurred in the past. Examples include a British Columbia couple who bought a SUPER 7 ticket worth $8.75 Million in Alberta and took about six months to claim their prize as their ticket languished at the bottom of a briefcase. A Saskatchewan $2 Million winner delayed his LOTTO 6/49 claim for more than five months to tend to his crops and harvest. And, over two decades ago, a Winnipeg university student took nine months to claim his prize, after inadvertently using his $2 Million LOTTO 6/49 ticket as a bookmark in a school textbook. The lucky winner found the ticket as he cleaned out his books for the year.

Control standards on LOTTO 6/49 do not allow lottery officials to identify exactly where in Alberta the current $14.9 Million ticket was sold until the prize is claimed. Officials have advised, however, that the ticket was sold in Alberta outside of Edmonton and Calgary. If the prize is not claimed by June 7, 2007, the $14.9 Million prize will be returned to players in future Bonus or promotional draws.
